Modern zoos are significant contributors to the conservation of wild animals. Many zoos actively operate their own projects in the field, but contributions do not stop there; the populations of endangered species held in zoos also generate support. As well as the obvious areas of preserving genetic diversity over time and educating and informing the general public, zoo populations can form a highly successful base for fundraising and a vital resource for producing useful biological information and skills.
